Improve the UX in Ask Concourse for Reference Number

In Ask Concourse there are references [^1] in the text to help the user track the identified links where the content came from, but can that be more visually appealing? The [^1] is pretty rough looking, large and there is no spacing between that and the works which is not very easy on the eyes.
Ex: "Statement of Work (SOW)[^3]." (even looks better copied here than in Ask Concourse - maybe there is a font issue too?)
